Have you ever been caught in the middle of a heated argument? Has anyone ever spoken these words to you: "HEY BUDDY, TAKE A HIKE!" If so, I am about to tell you how to give this phrase a whole new meaning.

My husband and I just returned from a nice, relaxing trip to Colorado. We stayed in a luxurious condo, well, okay, it was actually a small cottage snuggled in a heavily wooded area, located in the Rocky Mountains. The scenery was beautiful as the tall trees and majestic mountains surrounded us. We were in the Rockies so we thought we might as well take advantage of the fresh air, peace and quiet and HIKING. HIKING? I thought this was supposed to be a nice and relaxing trip! After a few days of the wide-open spaces, we actually enjoyed the walking and hiking (a.k.a. strenuous exercise) realizing that we were doing so much; we decided that we would keep track of our steps. We drove to the closest town and bought a pedometer for each of us.

For the first time in the twenty-eight years that my husband and I have been married, we purchased our first set of…pedometers. Oh boy! Now, we could keep track of our every step, which was exactly what our pedometers were suppose to do! After setting the measurement for our individual strides we were on our way to counting steps…uphill, downhill and all the in-betweens. It would be fun! For some reason, I thought it was going to be more fun than my husband thought it would be!

"HEY BUDDY, TAKE A HIKE!" (This is where you make sure you are wearing your pedometer)

Pedometers: A pedometer is a pager-sized device worn on your belt that simply records the number of steps you take based on your body’s movement. Some pedometers are analog devices that simply measure steps. Some are fancier digital models that track the distance you walk, plus the calories you burn. All you really need is a simple step counter so you can monitor if you walk the recommended 10,000 steps per day.

For long term health and reduced chronic disease risk: 10,000 steps a day

For successful, sustained weight loss: 12,000 - 15,000 steps a day

To build aerobic fitness: Make 3,000 or more of your daily steps fast.

Example:

I wore my pedometer while taking a walk around the quarter-mile school track, counting 473 steps. I multiplied by four to estimate that I took about 1,892 steps a mile. Another day I took a walk and covered 6,685 steps. I divided 6,685 by 1900 (estimated) and got 3.52, or about three and a half miles walked. Now, what color blouse was I wearing? How many steps would I need to take if I plan to stop walking at 5:15 p.m.? Okay, I threw in those last two questions but doesn’t that remind you of one of those math problems from your high school days? (Only Baby Boomers need answer)

To sum things up: Walking is great exercise and the pedometer is a very motivating device. My husband and I have worn the magnificent little gadgets for two months now (at least 15,000 steps each day).

My husband and I have lost 15 pounds EACH (of course, we were watching what we were eating, or shall I say NOT eating) I really don’t mind wearing the pedometer, clipped to my scrubs everyday. In fact, it is kind of like when I forget to wear my watch. I feel naked without it! (That’s another story)

If I should find myself in a situation that someone says: "HEY BUDDY, TAKE A HIKE!" I will make sure my pedometer is set, give a big smile and answer, "I think I will."
