ASK VICKI - When I got fired from my six figure job that I loved, I thought my life was over. I was devastated.Published 12/3/2010

Q. When I got fired from my six figure job that I loved, I thought my life was over. I was devastated. But as the weeks turned into months I realized I had been living my life as a robot, for a very long time. Was that really living?

A. Countless people do live robotic lives. They might admit that they aren’t really happy but do they stop and inventory their lives and try to make changes?  Usually not before something devastating happens to them, their children or their income.
It sounds like getting fired may have actually saved your life. When you have a high pressured, demanding work environment you will also have high stress with long term consequences. The six figure income “almost always” comes with physical, mental and emotional reminders that life is not that good.
Unfortunately Americans get VERY focused on “stuff” as a measurement of success and comfort, never taking inventory if all this “comfort” is really working.  Our symptoms will usually tell us but we typically ignore them and work more, forging an even closer relationship with our computers, IPhones and maybe a few drinks that become more drinks.
So now you can rewrite your new life, choosing a job that may have less income but more life value. Sometimes valuable lessons come to us in initially painful experiences but maybe that is the only way to get our attention. Good Luck!!!!
